Turbulent Souvenirs/Memories
Düren, 2002
A spiral-shaped labyrinth consisting of 10.000 perfume
test strips offers a sense perception of time and memory. The spiral fills
the room in the course of which electronic smell stations set free smells
associated with memories - like licorice, wood fire, violets, snow or
L'Heure Bleue - a historic composition of 1912. The idea exists, that
the creation of this perfume was also a premonition of the war. L'Heure
Bleue is the hour when the light changes between day and night and symbolizes
for me also the time of change. The smells evoke memories/images of different
phases of life (childhood/adultdood).
Through the free spaces between the "paper walls"
the visitors wonder through a path - being surrounded by a great number
of perfume test stripes - into the center of the rooms which is dipped
into blue light. While smells are being released periodically - there
is a constant sea of voices - people from different language regions talk
about memories of smell. Realities, imaginations, memories mix and give
the viewer the possibility to experience not yet discovered levels of
perception.
